Mike and Phil at the Double

The annual "Children In Need" Doubles competition took place on Friday evening with a much reduced entry compared to previous years, which at least meant that a complete round-robin could take place where every pair played all the others in 5 minute matches. Last years winners were not competing, nor were many of the previous "serial" winners of this trophy. The only pair with "previous" were Simon Pugh & Colin Roberts who won in 2003, but Mike Hetherington who has took the title twice in 2008 with his dad Dave, and the following year 2009 with Dan Cronin was the most recent holder of the trophy, so they were in theory the form players in this years pairs.

Six pairs of players; Peter Turnbull & Leigh Conway, Keith Pearson & Peter Penrose, Simon Pugh & Colin Roberts, Mike Hetherington & Phil Mc Straw, Gordon Thomson & Mark Fox and Steve Walker & Andrew Bragg were pitted against each other to find the top 4 pairs to contest the semi-finals, which turned out to be all except Gordon & Mark and Peter & Leigh.

In the first semi-final Colin and Simon were the victors and they were joined by Mike and Phil as the winners of the second semi-final, but first of all pie, chips and gravy was the supper of choice before all thoughts turned to the final thereafter.

After a period to allow the food to at least get part-way towards the stomach the final was on and although it was pretty even for the first dozen or so points, it was Mike and Phil who forged ahead in the 10 minute contest, never to be pegged back, and at time-up it was Mike and Phils victory that claimed this years title.

The main beneficiary of course was the Children In Need cause and our efforts raised £150 over the evening, it's distribution to be decided on in the days to come, thanks to all who took part in what is a great social competition.
