Ladies Champions 2015

Finally we have concluded 2015's club competitions the Ladies Club Championship and Handicap, unfortunately the Veterans over 60's couldn't get their slippers off in time, or out of their rocking-chairs, and it had to be cancelled.

Ladies Handicap Finalists Margaret Donald & Jordan Corlett Ladies Handicap Champion Margaret Donald

In the Ladies Handicap Final, two well matched and well handicapped finalists, Margaret Donald and Jordan Corlett fought out a tense three game match in which experience overcame youth on this occasion. With both players playing off scratch up to 15 points, it was Jordan who settled better into her game in the first as she opened up a good 11/4 lead after the pair of them had shared the first 8 points, with this sort of lead Jordan coasted on to take the first game 15/6. Margaret was again slow out of the blocks in the second game losing 3 of the first 4 points, but from then on she was transformed. Jordan's high power game was easy to read and with Margaret volleying everything that wasn't wide enough from Jordan it was all going Margarets way now, and from being behind she took 7 out of 8 points to get a good lead. Jordan was becoming more vocal as her game faltered and had to dig-in. This she did and clawed her way back to level at 10 all and then went in front 12/10, but then let Margaret back in with a point. A few swapped points later and it was matchball to Jordan at 14/13 but Margaret held on to claim the point. at 14 all it was a second matchpoint to Jordan and a gameball to Margaret, such is the beauty of sudden death Handicap squash. Margaret triumphed and won the point for a 15/14 scoreline, and it was one game all. The third and final game saw Margaret open up with 6 points won out of 8 and Jordan was under pressure. Always behind she plugged away but as Margaret picked up an odd point here and there Jordan wasn't reeling her in fast enough but by the time that 20 points had been played there was only 2 points in it, as Margaret led 11/9. Jordan went for a couple of strange winners when rallies were what she needed and Margaret soon had 6 matchballs to play with, she let Jordan back in on the first of them and looked a little nervous as Jordan took away the next two points also to make it 14/12 to Margaret. Fear not, a cross-court boast from Margaret wasn't reached by Jordan and it game and match to Margaret 15/12 and 2-1, making her champion for 2015.

Ladies Club Championship Finalists Linda Winder & Jessica Winder Ladies Club Champion Jessica Winder

The Ladies Club Championship again saw the mother and daughter show with Linda Winder and Jessica taking part, and hopefully it was not to be a repeat of the last time they contested the final when Linda damaged a shoulder, thankfully it was injury free this year although Linda was sporting a smart blue strapping on her forearm. Jessica set off on top form and was 4-0 up in no time as Linda looked out of touch, and at 6/2 and 8/4 the lead was being managed by Jessica, but Linda then clicked into gear and levelled the score at 8 all, but Jessica nullified the threat and won 6 of the next 8 points and eventually took the first game 15/11. A more cagey second game saw Linda keep pegging back Jessicas points and at 3 all it was tight, only then for Jessica to start picking off Lindas cross-courts with some fantastic angled cross-court volleys of her own, adding in a few tidy drop-shots to boot and before long Jessica had a comfortable 11/5 lead. A couple of points were swapped and Jessica took the second game too 15/8. If Linda thought that Jessica would tire, or feel the strain after her recent injury lay-off it was to be shortlived, with Jessica hitting some lovely winners to take 7 points out of 8. Linda steadied the points loss a little with three winners but another run of 7 winners from Jessica meant the end was nigh, and with a final winner it was Jessica's title with a 15/4 third game and a 3-0 deserved victory.
