This is one of the clubs oldest competitions and has had many
formats over the years. Currently it is run at about the same time
as the national 'Children in Need' appeal, as a charity competition
the proceeds being donated to local children's charities. Dependant
on the number of entry's most if not all 4 courts are booked and
teams are split off into divisions
Divisional winners and runners up then play off in quarter and
semi finals to give us a final. 'America' scoring games are played
for a set length of time dependant on the number of entry's this
could be anything from 4 to 10 minutes. Play starts when the marker
calls 'play' and ends when he calls 'time'
Something that has never changed over the years is the
social/sporting nature of the competition. We have always provided
some liquid refreshments throughout the evening and meat &
potato pies to keep up the player's strength. We have in fact over
the course of this competition 'seen off' two local confectioners.
Murphy's of Egremont provided the pies for a number of years (round
ones in a silver foil containers) followed by Eldon's (tray pie cut
into slabs) of Cleator. Both have now ceased trading but the
doubles goes on. The liquid refreshments are still transported to
the squash club by players, by hand, in Jug's. We stopped using
buckets for this purpose a number of years ago.
