Cockermouth B 2 v 20 Windscale B

At the half way stage of the season Windscale lie in second place in the league, so made the short trip to Cockermouth after the Christmas break looking to consolidate their position.

First on court for Windscale was Paul Ditchburn, hoping  to get his team off to a flying start. The first game was a close affair Paul edging it 10-8 against Howard Beanland. Paul seemed to have the game under control as he raced to a 7-0 lead in the next but he relaxed too much and lost it 8-10. This was the shock he needed to regain his concentration taking the next two games 10-8 and 9-4

Next on court was the battle of the heavyweights, Dave Jackman for Scales against Joe Aitcheson. Dave started slowly unable to find his normally accurate lobs, losing a tense opener 10-8. Dave however used all his guile and showed the benefits of his intense training regime over the festive period to storm back and win the next three games 9-2, 9-6, 9-0.

The number fours were next on court Vic 'The Assassin' Williamson for Scales against Barry Avery. Vic has been struggling of late with a painful calf injury. Playing under the influence of Deep Heat, Vic's hard hitting attacking style was too much for Barry as he won comfortably 9-3, 9-3, 9-0.

The penultimate game of the evening were the number 3's, Mike Jenkins for Scales against John Nixon. Mike gave away a number of years to his opponent but more than countered this with some immaculate squash and touches of finesse. Mike earned a good win 9-3, 9-4, 9-5 to preserve his 100% win record for the team.

Last on court were the number ones. John Banks who was also the Windscale captain for the evening, against Steve Irlam. John started slowly after an inactive festive period and had to battle hard to gain the upper hand in the first game eventually winning it 9-6. From this point on John seemed to relax and became more confident playing some tight, controlled squash. Steve battled gamely but tired, allowing John to win out the match, 9-3, 9-0.

Windscale took maximum points from this encounter to set up a humdinger of a clash against third placed Moota next week.
