Windscale B v Brampton
Sunday 16 May 2004
Windscale B were at full strength for this, their longest trip of the season away to Brampton " B ". Paul Ditchburn having recovered from injury was back in the squad and 1st on for Scales. Comfortably winning the opener 9-4 Paul then let the advantage slip losing the next 3 games to Alan Dodd 9-7, 9-3, 10-9.
Jim Irving fared little better losing in strait sets to Bill Armstrong 9-5, 9-4, 9-7. Wearing Day-Glo pink safety glasses Bill showed all the craft and skill picked up in 20 years of county league squash.
While Bill was winning points Jim was arguing with the referee about the odd call and generally looking for excuses. A lesson learned I think!
Having won the first 2 games 10-8,10-8 and playing probably his best squash of the season Jeff Smith looked like pulling one back for Windscales. Dominating the 'T' and playing with authority Jeff soon established a 6-0 lead in the 3rd game only to let it slip losing it 9-7. Gathering his composure for the 4th game Jeff again took the lead 6-0 but again his opponent fought back to win this one 9-6. Graham Hamilton the Brampton man couldn't believe his luck but capitalised on it winning the final game 9-2. This was a super game for the spectators, both players giving it 100%.
With the match lost, all Dave Jackman had to play for was pride. Jacko won the first 2 games 9-7, 10-8, but once again a Brampton man staged a fight back. Winning the next 10-8, Peter Urwin then went on to take the next 2 games 9-2, 9-6. This was another excellent game of squash that could have gone either way, marred only by some questionable decisions made by the marker that clearly upset the concentration of the Windscale player.
Going on court at 10.30 pm with the match lost, the prospect of getting home well after midnight and most of his team mates heading for the Pub was hardly inspirational for the Windscales No 1 John Banks. Brampton secured the match inflicting a second 'whitewash' in consecutive weeks on Windscales. Kelvin Carruthers winning 9-1, 9-2, 9-3.
Despite the obvious disappointment of this defeat the Windscales team were in buoyant mood at the excellent after match reception and for the journey home arriving back in Egremont at about 3.00am.
