Windscale B v Cockermouth B

Mike Naylor and Jeff Smith were unavailable to travel to Cockermouth for this the last match of the season for Windscale. Mike calling off on Sunday evening with a chest infection gave Windscales a chance to try out new boy David Lacey.

The match got off to a disastrous start Paul Ditchburn going down 9-3, 7-9, 9-4, 9-6 to 65 years young Bob Garland. ' Ditchy was unable to hit good lengths or move his opponent around the court, as Bob played some excellent shots, most of which were drops for a well deserved win. Though bitterly disappointed Paul will not be retiring as some of his so called team mates suggested. He has vowed to get his revenge before Bob is 70.

Dave Jackman faired no better going down 9-5, 9-2, 9-3 to Andy Sealby. Dave who has just returned from a 3 week break in India looked tired and after some initial resistance quickly ran out of steam.

Jim Irving pulled one back for Windscale beating Sardi Bauteba 9-1, 9-4, 7-9, 9-2. Winning the first 2 games in style Jim lead the 3rd 7-0 only to relax his concentration allowing Sardi to fight back and win that one 9-7. The 4th and final game was much like the first 2, Jim dominating the game for an emphatic 9-2 win.

The next game on court undoubtedly was the hardest fought game of the evening. Playing his 1st game for Windscales Dave Lacy gave an excellent account of himself before going down in a 5 setter to Cockermouth's Andy Fennel. The 1st 2 games went to Andy 10-8, 9-8 the 3rd to Dave 9-2. The 4th was a marathon of a game that Dave edged, and had the Cockermouth player gasping for breath. The rest between games was enough for Andy to recover and in the deciding game he secured the points for Cockermouth winning 9-4.

Phil Gemson made it 4-1 to Cockermouth beating John Banks 9-5, 9-5, 4-9, 9-0. A spirited fight back in the 3rd game by young ' Banksy' could not be sustained as the youngster ' hit the wall' in the final game.
