Windscale B v Moota

Windscale travelled to Moota without their unbeaten number 5 Mike Naylor, rested as part of the squad system. In his place at 5 was Paul Ditchburn. Losing the first 3-9 'Ditchy' recovered to win the next 9-1 against Mike Scott. The next 2 games went 10-9 to Mike, 10-8 to Ditchy. The result now resting on the fifth. In what had turned out to be a very evenly hard fought game, Mike had just enough to take the fifth 9-6 securing a win for Moota.

Dave Young went on to secure the 2nd win of the evening for Moota beating Windscale's Jeff Smith 9-2, 9-4, 9-3. Jeff never really got into his stride, Dave keeping the pressure on from start to finish.

Jim Irving stopped the rot, beating Moota's Brenda Gibson 10-9, 10-8, 10-9. This was a good win for Jim, Brenda having lost only 2 games all season. All 3 games could have gone either way as the scores were so close. ,In this serve drop serve drop encounter, Brenda made good use of the cold ball and a slow deliberate serve. Resisting the temptation to try and vary the game, Jim fell back on all his years of experience to grind out a result.

The shock result of the evening came in the next game. Dave Jackman having beaten Claude Raines 3-0 in the first half of the season was expected to win this one. Losing the first 9-3 'Jacko' recovered the ascendancy winning the next two 9-4, 9-1. Having had a broken bone in his hand over the Christmas period Claude showed that the healing process was complete, winning the next two games and the match for Moota 9-4, 9-7.

Evergreen Ron Harris, the Moota captain with more than two decades of county league squash under his belt, overcame the youthful exuberance of John Banks to win the final game of the evening 9-7, 9-6, 9-7. Though obviously disappointed, young 'Banksy' gave a very good account of himself covering every inch of the court.
