Windscale C versus Brampton
Sunday 16 May 2004
Windscale were rocked by the late withdrawal of regular number one John Banks with a chest infection. Coupled with the fact that regular number 2 Dave Jackman was on holiday and the visitors were table toppers. Brampton who had beaten Windscale 5-0 on their last meeting were clear favourites.
First on for Windscale was Ged Gilroy. 'Gentleman' Ged, proved a worthy substitute for the home team beating Graham Coulthard 9-3, 9-2, 9-3. This game was as one sided as the score suggests. Super fit Ged having already played earlier in the evening showed no mercy with a short sharp execution.
Making it 11 in a row, the still unbeaten Mike Naylor extended Windscales lead beating Colin Brownson 10-8, 9-0, 9-3. After a hard fought 1st game Colin was found wanting as Mike's experience and determination ground him down. Ultimately an easy win for Mike and with only a couple of games remaining an unbeaten season looks more and more likely.
Having lost to Alan Dodd earlier in the season, Windscale's Paul Ditchburn was up for this one. Both players fought hard and after the first three games the score stood at 2-1 to Paul, 9-7, 9-5, 5-9. Winning the 3rd game Alan looked as though he could make a come back but Paul recovered the ascendancy winning the final game 9-3 and the match for Windscale.
Windscale's Jeff Smith was the unluckiest loser of the evening going down to the smallest of margins 8-10, 8-10, 8-10 to Graham Hamilton. In each of the games Jeff got to 8 first but was unable to get those all important winning points. Credit must be given to the Brampton man who stuck to his task well, and managed to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.
Last on and with the points in the bag Jim Irving was in buoyant mood for his return meeting with seasoned campaigner Bill Armstrong. Having lost to Bill 3-0 earlier in the season this was a match that needed maximum concentration and determination from the Windscale man. Both were forthcoming in abundance as Jim secured the final game of the evening 9-4, 9-3, 9-5.
Currently laying 3rd in the division this result and some other unexpected results in the division have thrust Windscale back into the 'contender frame' for winning the division. Wins in the remaining games are crucial. Watch this space!
