Scales are Champions

Having beaten the League leaders last week to take the top spot Scales needed a maximum in this their final fixture of the season to be certain of winning the championship.

First on for Scales was Mr Consistency Mike Jenkins his opponent young Daniel Cronin. With 9 win's out of 10 starts Mike was to strong for Daniel winning 9-1, 9-0, 9-0. Daniel though well beaten stuck to his task, playing good shots throughout.

Dave Lacey made it 2 in a row for Scales beating Havens John Messenger 9-2, 9-1, 9-3. This has been Dave's first full season for Scales and a good one at that. So much so he has been pencilled in to the club's A team for next season.

Dave Henderson had a chance to stop the rot for Haven narrowly losing the 1st to Dave Jackman 9-6. After his characteristic slow start Jacko then took control winning the next 2 games 9-1, 9-0.

Jim Irving found himself without a game, his Haven opponent failing to turn up. This gave Scales another 3-0 result.

A white wash was on the cards as Scales Martin Blair took a 2 game lead, 9-4, 9-6 against Haven starlet Amie Cronin. These were 2 hard games, the results secured through shear hard graft. Amie then showed the skills of a county player which she is and the wisdom picked up through playing at an higher level. Playing Shots and running Martin about the court she pulled back into contention winning the next 2 games 9-4, 9-7. The final and deciding game was a cliff hanger. Martin on the one hand had done most of the running but the super fit Sellafield Fireman was "fired up" ( excuse the pun ) for this one. Amie on the other hand had a tired look about her but she was on the ascendancy and playing some exquisite winners. This match had the packed gallery riveted to their seats. Martin was first to 8 but was made to choose as Amie drew level. Martin chose 10, Amie went 9-8 up. Martin squared it 9-9 going on to win by the odd point 10-9 securing the league championship title.

Other Windscales players who made up the championship winning squad were John Banks, Victor Williamson, Paul Ditchburn, Jeff Smith and John McFadden.
