Mixed start for Windscale's teams
Thursday 30 November 2006
SIX weeks into the season and it has been a mixed start for Windscale's three men's teams at the Falcon complex.
The two teams in the Premier County League have both kicked off with a couple of good wins followed by a couple of narrow defeats in the other games.
Wins for the A team against Penrith and Dalton have been tempered by two losses to Carlisle in both the league and county cup.
Highlights so far have been the encouraging form of the younger members of the team with Michael Hetherington unbeaten so far and Liam Barrett's tenacity playing against all the top class No.1s in the league culminating in his first win of the season against Dalton's Chris Bowyer in an epic 3-2 encounter.
The return of the B team has been a great success so far, each occasion being highly competitive with two easy wins against Carlisle and Dalton mixed in with narrow 3-2 defeats to Kendal, Appleby and top of the table Wigton, who scraped by with the narrowest of margins.
The real success story has been the fantastic progress of the C team in league one.
Unbeaten after three wins over Whitehaven B, Kendal B and Penrith B, the team made the long journey to Brampton and came away with a 19 point return in a 4-1 victory to set up a terrific encounter with Wigton B, themselves unbeaten, in a couple of weeks' time.
Windscale Squash Club annual doubles competition was played on Friday night to raise money for local children's charities.
The competition was split into two divisions with six teams in each, the winners and runners up playing off in the semi finals.
The first semi, saw club champion Neil Pattinson and Doug Alderton sneak a narrow 16-14 win over Colin Roberts and Simon Pugh.
John Crichton and Jake Musson met them in the final, after seeing off Keith Jones and Jim Irving, 17-16, in the second semi.
The final started out very evenly contested but as the game wore on the combined fitness of John and Jake enabled them to come home worthy winners 21 points to 14.
A fitting finale to an excellent evenings entertainment, thanks to all the players, spectators, Falcon staff and caterer Sue Mullinder.
