Windscale ‘high five’ at Carlisle open

At the recent Carlisle Open Squash Competition, Windscale Squash Club produced their best ever results to produce no less than 5 age group winners.

With a reduced number of Windscale entries from the previous year, due to the two days competition playing havoc with everybody's weekend commitments, it was down to the 13 entries in the 3 age groups to show the rest of the county how we are progressing down the dark end of the county, (where the Carlisle lights never like to shine).

At Boys U.13's Adam Pearson blew away all before him to register his first final appearance, and then went on to lift the age group title at the first attempt, a just reward for the hard work and effort that he and his coaches have put in over the relatively short time that he has been playing.

The Girls U.13 Champion was Jessica Winder for the second year in a row, beating her 'old' adversary Katie Penrice, and having swept all before her at this age group for a couple of years, will look forward to harder opposition in the next age group up.

In the Girls U.15's, Hannah Crichton lifted the winners trophy. After winning through the round robin event on the Saturday in first place, she managed to overcome a strong challenge from the second ranked player from Wigton in a tense five set final.

Our fourth winner was Lara Cooper at Girls U.17's whose all round power, and fitness, was too much for all her opponents to deal with. Again this is testimony to the effort she and her mother go to, to enable her to compete in competitions, and to regularly train at the club.

The club's fifth winner was Liam Barratt, at Boys U.17's and he strode through the entire competition in virtual second gear, rarely tested and never extended. However not taking anything away from his performance, which was efficient, and good practice for further competitions to come.

Well done to Courtney Musson, who played well but couldn't outplay her harder hitting opponent in the Plate final, and finished runner-up.

Our other entrants were Megan Singleton, Jackson Holliday, Michael Hobbs, Jack Brownbridge, Ross Singleton, Bradley Mills, and Owen Barratt.

Well done to all our entries, our standards are much improved, and you will all benefit, the more you are exposed to competition squash at county level and beyond.
