Whitehaven Ladies v Windscale Ladies

The home fixture for Whitehaven was less fruitful, than their experience on their opponents courts the week previously. All the same players were involved and where as before the Whitehaven number one, and number two had performed the best, this time it was the number three, four and five, who upped their games, alas to no avail as the 'Windscale Machine' powered on.

At 5 Sharon Hoskins, fresh from a league match at the Windscale club, had her eye in and was loosened up, ready for the re-match with Hannah Crichton, and commendably played some excellent squash. The Windscale youngster was in no mood for a long match, following on from England Area squash training on Saturday, and the Carlisle junior comp. on Sunday, and Hannah claimed the match 3-0, 9/0, 9/0, 9/3.

At 4 Jessica Winder, having played the same squash over the weekend as Hannah, was also in no mood for a long match against Helen Duncanson, winning the first game in no-time at all. Whereas the previous week Helen had lost comfortably, this time she took the fight to Jessica in the second, and Jessica's long match in the Carlisle u. 17's final looked to have sapped her strength somewhat, however she hung on and sneaked the second as well. Helen dug deeper in the third and was always in front and clawed back a game, to put the tie within reach, but Jessica's ability shone through in the end, to claim the match 3-1, 9/0, 9/5, 8/10, 9/2.

Next on was Sarah Frain against Tracy Sharpe, and the closest match of the evening took place. Sarah and Tracy were point for point all the way through the opener, and indeed Tracy had two excellent chances to claim the opener, however it was Sarah who played the winners when required, and was one up. The second was a carbon copy with neither girl able to pull away into a healthy lead. The score ebbed and flowed either way, and it was again Sarah who lasted the pace the better, to claim the second. Both girls were blowing a bit in the third, and Sarah pulled out a handy few points lead which Tracy, try as she might, could never close, and Sarah duly won, 3-0, 9/7, 9/6, 9/2.

At 2 Holly Lee was hoping Lara Cooper was in the same form as the previous week, when she took a two game lead, only to lose in five gruelling games. Alas it was a more focussed Lara this week, and that was bad news for Holly. Some of the pace generated on the drives in the first game from both players left the other player bemused as the ball flew past them, and fortunately for Windscale it was Holly who was on the receiving end more often than Lara, resulting in an opening game win to Lara. As hard as Holly tried Lara just wouldn't let her play, and following the same score in the second as the first, and a whitewash in the third, it was Lara's match 3-0, 9/2, 9/2, 9/0, and a welcome return to some decent form from Lara.

Last up and straight from coaching at Windscale was Linda Winder against sister, Margaret Thompson. Linda was soon in the ascendancy and out positioned her sister with nagging lengths and deceptively directed shots, however Margaret played her part in some lengthy rallies, usually though for very little reward. Linda claiming the first two games with similar score-lines. Margaret was determined to dig deep in the third, and some thoughtful squash and good drops, caught out her more experienced opponent in the early exchanges, but Linda has energy to spare, and merely went through a couple of gear changes to bring the proceedings to a quick halt, wrapping up the third and match 3-0, 9/4, 9/5, 9/5.

As has been said before, another excellent win, with only the one point against, and that's the way the girls need to proceed if they are to achieve success in their first season. Bring on whoever next!
