England Squash Grand Prix, Birmingham University March 2009
Tuesday 31 March 2009
At the
recent England Squash Grand Prix hosted by Birmingham University,
Windscales top two ranked junior girls Jessica Winder and Hannah
Crichton were again flying the flag for West Cumbrian squash
against the best of the rest of the country in this invitation only
event.
Both were entered in the Girls under 15's event, and in the first round Hannah Crichton (national ranking 35) lost to Anna Kimberley (30) from Essex 3-0, (Anna eventually going on to win the tournament), which meant that in the Monrad ranking system being used that Hannah was now playing for position 9 to 16. Next match saw Hannah beat Sophie Hodges (35) from Norfolk 3-1, putting her into position 9 to 12, in the next round she beat Kate Alcock (29) from Dorset 3-0, which meant that she was now in a final play off for position 9 or 10. That match was against Emily Crowcroft (42) from Hampshire, and Hannah won 3-1, to secure position 9 overall.
Jessica Winder (National Ranking 27) beat Georgina Gard (40) from Essex 3-0, and was therefore playing for position 1 to 8. In her next encounter she beat Amy Stenner (38) Hampshire also 3-0, and was now playing for positions 1 to 4. Her next round saw her up against Hannah's conqueror in the first round Anna Kimberley (30) from Essex, and Jessica lost 3-1, and so was now playing her last game to finish 3rd or 4th. Against Katrina Burrows (34) from Merseyside, Jessica won 3-1 to finish in third position overall.
Congratulations to both girls on an excellent weekend's effort, and to their dedication and application. Within the last month both girls have entered tournaments in Manchester, Sheffield and Birmingham between them, and in the weeks to come will travel to Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham (twice), as well as to Carlisle for the Ladies League Cup Final and to Kendal for a league game. They are indeed two well travelled squash ambassadors for Windscale Squash Club.
