Windscale success at Carlisle Junior Open

At the recent Carlisle Junior Open competition, Windscale Squash juniors had a very successful return from their 9 competitors, winning 4 of the finals, having 3 runners-up, and 1 Plate final runner up.

In the Boys under 15's Final, Adam Pearson continued his recent good form, 'beating a just returned from being injured' Michael Hobbs 3-0. Both having had comfortable passage through the semis with 3-0 wins. In the Boys under 13's Jackson Holliday beat his county team-mate Jake Twentyman 3-1 for a well deserved win.

Completing the trio of Boys successes was Ross Singleton in the under 11's. Ross was the star performer at the competition with some excellent squash from the outset. Only 9 years old, he more than tested his much older opponents and made his way through to the semi-final with an easy 3-0 victory over Oliver Steward. Chris Edge was a much tougher opponent and Ross struggled through the opening game taking it 12/10, only to see Chris take the next two games relatively easily. Ross pulled his game together in the fourth following a tactical talking to from his Windscale supporters, taking it narrowly and sending the match into a fifth game. This was a tense affair with both players having good chances to win it. However it was the determination of Ross that won through in the end taking the final game 12/10 for a 3-2 victory.

The Final was soon to follow and Ross was up against the much older and heavier hitter Daniel Harrison, in a rematch of the County Final from September, when Ross was well beaten. The first two games saw Daniel test Ross to the full, as he pushed Ross around the court with his well positioned drives and short game, wrapping them up fairly quickly. Ross looked weary, not surprising following on from his tough semi, but the diminutive Windscale player has lots of guts, and dug in to pull back the third in a thrilling finish to the game, surviving  3 match balls before winning it 16/14, to make it 2-1 to Daniel. A quick drink, and a few words with his Windscale coach got Ross ready for the challenge, and more great squash from the pair followed in the fourth game. It was Ross that again pulled through, surviving 2 match balls, for a deserved 12/10 game to level the match at 2 games all. Daniel was by now crestfallen and no matter how much his coach cheered him on, Ross had turned the match round to his favour, and it was now Daniel that needed to recover the match. The first eight points were shared evenly, and then Ross opened up a four point lead, only to see Daniel pull it back a couple of points. Ross then pulled away again to have his own match ball at 10-6, but Daniel played steady squash to take the score to 10-9. Undaunted by this late recovery, Ross made sure that Daniel worked for every point, and it was a great tight length that Daniel crashed into the tin to give the game and match to Ross 3-2. Ross on this form will be more than a match for his opponents for many years to come, and Windscale have another very competitive and capable player to add to their ever lengthening list of Competition winners.

The Girls were not to be outdone, in the under 17's event, Jessica Winder and Hannah Crichton contested the Final. Both had seen off Sarah Frain in the round-robin, and it was business as usual when these two contest competitions, although recent club form had Hannah beating Jessica three times running. The final started in that vein, Hannah taking the opener, only to see a more fired up Jessica take the second to level the match. Hannah had game ball in the third, but managed to lose it and Jessica won that game 13/11. A very tight fourth saw the two players exhibit some excellent squash, and it was no surprise that the tightness of this game demonstrated what little there is between these two players at the moment. The score was 12/10 in Jessica's favour, therefore winning the match 3/1.

Megan Singleton in the Girls under 15's was the runner-up to Victoria Watson, having played well to beat two opponents in the round-robin, she found that the harder hitting Victoria gave her less time to play, and although she played well, she was never really comfortable and lost 3-1.

The only other finalist was Bradley Mills who contested the Boys under 17 Plate final, losing to Aaron Murray 3-0. The other competitor on the day was Ryan Doran, who acquitted himself well in the boys 17's where he lost to the hard hitting Mitchel Parr in the semi final.
