Summer Team Final

dsc01227.jpgOwen Barretts 'BACKLASH' team consisting of Ross Singleton at 5, Simon Martin at 4, Daniel Andrews at 3, Bradley Mills at 2, and Owen at 1 were close winners of this seasons Summer Team Final agains Ryan Dorans 'DODGEMS' team. Chris Bishop was their number 5 and got the team off to a winning start the night before the final (due to his holiday starting on Friday) with a 2-1 win over Ross. At position 4 Lisa Powe gave the Dodgems an even greater lead with another 2-1 win over Simon, as the tie looked to be swinging the Dodgems direction.

Next on court were the 3's and Barbara Telfer, standing in for Lynn Crichton who is currently out of action having played all through the competition, was up against the hard hitting Daniel. Her more methodical approach allowed her to win a game, before tiredness and constant retreiving took it's toll with Daniel running out a 2-1 winner. The game score was now 5-4 to the Dodgems, and with the number 2's next up potentiall only this game away from the title. Nigel Reeves at the best of times a nervous player in front of spectators was a little apprehensive from the outset, as Bradley showed the large crowd the value of committment to training and quality coaching, as he showed a level of squash not seen from him before, and it was no surprise that the first game went all the way to sudden death at 14 all, Nigel sneaking the first. Bradley showed poise and skill in the second to level the game score at 1-1, but could not sustain it and Nigel won the third for his 2-1 win.

All that remained now with the match score 7-5 in the Dodgems favour, was for Ryan to take a game off Owen, easier said than done! Owen had the mother and father of a nosebleed on the way to the courts, but looked calm and serene as he wafted the ball around, making the younger Ryan retreive ball after ball, in what were some punishing rallies. As the scores progressed neither player was dominant and at 14 all it was game ball to Owen, but competition ball to Ryan, Owen prevailed and a relieved team drew breath. dsc01230.jpgThe second was no less enthralling, but a little easier for Owen as he dominated the exchanges and won with a few points to spare, for a 2-0 lead and to level the match score at 7 games all. Into the competition deciding game and again it was Owen first into his stride, with Ryan hanging on, but it was too late and hge ran out of gas as Owen pulled away to win the game 3-0 and his team the match 8 games to 7. Cue celebrations!

The John Birkett Memorial Shield presented to the Summer Team player of the competition was awarded to Lisa Powe, for her committment to her team, her friendliness to her opponents, and taking onboard the ethos of this social competition.
