Mum is still the boss

At the recent Cumbria Squash Senior County Closed Championships played at Carlisle Squash Club, an unusual occurrence unfolded to conclude in an unique event.

It happened in the Ladies Championship where the top three seeds all came from Windscale Squash Club.

No 1 seed Linda Winder faced No 4 seed, and former Windscale player Sarah Frain in the first semi-final, Sarah got off to a great start taking the first game, but then Linda got into her stride and drew level, then started to dominate the match, to win 3-1.

In the second semi-final, No2 seed Jessica Winder faced friend and team-mate Hannah Crichton No3 seed, and after three close games, Jess emerged a 3-0 winner to face "mum" in the ladies final.

Linda last played in the county championships in 1995, she won to become county champion, a year later daughter Jessica was born, and now Linda was to face her daughter in the 2011 county final.

Linda started better, as Jess seemed tense playing her mother in anger for the first time, and Linda took the first game. Jess then settled down and played some great squash, using her deception to send "mum" the wrong way several times, and went on to take a 2-1lead. Linda then dug deep and used all her reserves of experience and energy to grind out the fourth game and level at 2 games all.

Into the final game and Linda was determined to show Jess no mercy, keeping up the pressure she won the match 3-2 after a memorable final, to become County Champion for the second time, but with strange mixed feelings she confirmed later.
