| Steve Walker Vet's Over 50 Winner | Gavin Scott Vet's Over 40 Winner | Brian Atherton Club Championship Plate Winner |
The Vet's Over 50's was a tight affair between two well matched, but different styles of player, Colin Roberts who lets the ball do the work, and Steve Walker who doesn't mind running about a bit. On a warm court, with a hot ball it was Steve who preferred the conditions more but at one game all it was too close to call. Colin took a marathon third game 21/19 to sneak a game ahead, only to see Steve level the match again with a 15/13 fourth. All to play for in the fifth and it was Steve that triumphed with another tight 15/13 game to win 3-2, in an excellent match.
Gavin Scott and Nigel Stewart contested the Over Vet's 40's final, and it was Gavin who led throughout the opening game after starting with a four point salvo from the start, this created problems for Nigel, as the harder he tried the more loose his shots became, making things even easier for Gavin and he took the opener 15/8. The second followed a similar pattern in that Gavin was tighter and more accurate than Nigel, who unusually for him 'sprayed it about a bit'. Gavin picked off the loose stuff and soon had the second in the bag also, 15/7. Nigel couldn't make headway in the third either with Gavins good shots, outrageous mis-hit winners and dying and jumping nicks, frustrating him further. Gavin was soon at matchball 14/2, before Nigel relaxed, played the best squash he had done all evening and held up Gavin from his expected victory. Alas it was only a temporary reprieve for Nigel as Gavin thundered a cross court forehand into the back corner beyond Nigels desparing stretch for game and match point 15/8, and 3-0.
Brian Atherton 'won' the uncontested Club Championship Plate competition, owing to his opponent Daniel Andrews not having recovered from his injury picked up following his semi final victory.
