Winning start for Windscale Ladies
Monday 17 October 2011
Starting off where they have finished the last three seasons, Windscale Ladies were too strong for their Penrith counterparts tonight (Oct. 17th) with a comfortable 4-0 win, in the new format of 4 lady teams in this seasons Ladies County Leagues.
First on was the Windscale number 3 Lisa Powe (as the number 4 player Megan Singleton was left without an opponent, with Penrith only being able to muster 3 players for this opening fixture), and showing good speed around the court she soon had too much energy for her opponent Kerry Taylor to cope with and took the opener 9/5. From there she stepped up the pace and performances, taking the next 2 games for the loss of two and one points respectively, for a good 3-0 win.
Luisa Mc Gregor at number 2 was against Kath Gray and a hard hitting encounter ensued, interspersed with some tidy short play when required, Luisa took the first game which was tight 9/7, but got more distance between herself and Kath in the second, winning it more comfortably 9/3. Kath fought back in the third and although Luisa always looked as though there was more to give, occasional lapses of concentration let Kath back in. However Luisa wasn't to be denied her win and took the third game 9-6, for a 3-0 victory.
Hannah Crichton playing at number 1 completed the match, playing Vera Jackson and was in cruise control throughout. Vera gamely chased down all Hannah's' shots but from the opening points it was an uphill slog for Vera, with Hannah taking the opener 9/4. Vera dug deep in the second but had less to show for it as Hannah claimed the second game for the loss of only three points, despite Vera playing some nice short shots which caught Hannah too deep at times. The third game saw Hannah back on top early and as Vera tired the result was never in doubt, although at 9/6 to Hannah, Vera was never too far behind but Hannah had plenty left in the tank, and also took her game 3-0.
As usual Penrith Ladies were a pleasure to host and Windscale look forward to the return fixtures, when hopefully their Ladies will have a full complement to pick from, thereby making it a tighter match.
