Girls in Christmas action at Pontefract

Hannah Crichton and Jessica Winder spent their post Christmas and Boxing day time at the Pontefract Junior Open, looking for an improvement in their performances and more opportunities to rise in the National Rankings.

In the Girls under 17's, the draw wasn't exactly kind to Jessica with the number 4 seeded player Alicia Mead in the first round, Jessica losing 0-3 despite being well in the match in the opening two games, she surrendered the third with a token effort losing 9/11, 7/11, 2/11, putting her into the 9-16 place play-offs. Her second round was a bye, owing to her opponent withdrawing meaning her next opponent was Katrina Burrows whom she beat comfortably 3-0, 11/6, 11/4, 11/8 to put her in the 9-10 play off. Playing Amelia Henley she found no inspiration to push on, and other than a tight third game she lost 0-3, 5/11, 7/11, 10/12 to finish 10th overall.

Hannah Crichton in the Girls under 19's had Annie-Openshaw Blower in the first round and battled through a tough five game match of over 50 minutes with a 3-2 win, 11/13, 14/12, 11/7, 7/11, 12/10 to put her in the 1-8 play offs. Overnight Hannah fell victim to the vomiting bug that was prevalent at the time, and an early afternoon game against her opponent Lauren Tamila was a game too far, losing in no time at all 0-3, 6/11, 3/11, 1/11 but credit for making it onto court at all. Her next game later in the evening was much better in that at least she had shaken off the worst of the effects of the sickness and Helen Dowson was her opponent, Hannah lost the first game 6/11, but found her form in the following three games 11/6, 11/6, 11/8 for a 3-1 win and a play off for 5th-6th place. Hannah Williams was too strong in this play off game winning 3-0, 4/11, 6/11, 7/11, and Hannah finished 6th overall.
