Windscales juniors invade Carlisle Competition

No less than 15 Windscale juniors of all ages battled hard for honours at the Carlisle competition last weekend (January 7th), and the majority had a long day as they were involved in finals and play-offs right to the end.

Girls under 11 was a well represented category with four of our girls fighting it out with mainly Carlisle girls for the top places.

Zara Brannon had a tough opening game against the well fancied Michelle Tang from Workington, and there was no shame in losing the opening game of her day, this put her into the 5/8 positions and she finished as high as she could beating Rebecca Smith and Amy Rayson (both Carlisle) to win the Plate Final.

Ashton Telford won her first game against Amy Rayson but then came up against her club-mate and the number 1 seed Jordan Corlett to whom she lost, this put her in the 3/4 play offs against another club-mate Kaitlyn Carruthers to whom she also just lost to, finishing 4th

Kaitlyn Carruthers had the luxury of a bye in the first round to progress but then had to play Michelle Tang in the next and lost that putting her into the 3/4 play off as mentioned above, winning to finish 3rd overall.

Jordan Corlett beat Rebecca Smith in her opener and Ashton Telford in her next to set up a good final against Michelle Tang, but it was the Workington girl who came out on top and Jordan finished 2nd.

Our only other girl playing was Jessica Winder in the Girls under 19's, and she had her customary result, namely a win against Sarah Frain in what was the only game played in that category to finish as the winner.

The boys, all 10 of them, were mainly involved in all the important games as the day wore on with only two of the falling down in the way their draws panned out.

Thomas Bragg in the boys under 11's lost his opener to Joseph Broadley (Carlisle), and then lost his plate semi-final to club-mate Tim Outhwaite, whilst in the boys under 15, Sam Nichol lost his first game to number 1 seed and club-mate Jackson Holliday (Windscale) and then lost his second game to another club-mate Dominic Corlett in the plate semi-final.

Boys under 11,

Tim Outhwaite lost to Aidan Raine (Carlisle), but beat Thomas Bragg in the next to put himself into the plate final against Adam Goad (Carlisle) to whom he lost to finish as plate runner-up.

Boys under 13,

Brandon Groggins beat Zac Glaister in his first game to put him into the 1/8 play offs and in his second game he beat George Kemp (Wigton) to progress into the top four positions, here he met club-mate and number 1 seed Ross Singleton (Windscale) to whom he lost putting him in the 3/4 play off match, Brandon won this last game against Adam Gill (Wigton) to finish 3rd.

Ross Singleton was seeded 1 and had a first round bye, and he started with a next game win over George Kemp, followed by his win over Brandon Groggins to put him into the final against John Kemp (Wigton), alas he lost and so finished 2nd overall.

In the boys under 15's,

Dominic Corlett lost his first game to Jake Twentyman (Wigton), and as previously mentioned in his plate semi-final beat Sam Nichol putting himself in the plate final against Daniel Askew (Wigton) to whom he lost, thereby finishing as plate runner-up.

Jackson Holliday was seeded 1 and beat Sam Nichol to start, followed by a victory over Jake Twentyman in his 1/4 play off game putting him into the final against Daniel Harrison (Whitehaven). Jackson started brightly but faded as he saw the winning line to finish 2nd.

Boys under 17's also saw three competitors,

Michael Hobbs opened with a win over Michael Howson, to put him up against club-mate Adam Pearson to whom he lost, Michael was the plate winner.

Adam Pearson had a bye to start with and then beat Michael Hobbs, but lost to Peter Wallace to finish 2nd.

Peter Wallace also started with a bye and then beat Chris Waite (Workington), following this up with his final victory over Adam Pearson to finish as the winner.
